Keeping the Home Fires Burning

Submitted by Postie on

I was posted to 1RNZIR in January 1970 as the Postal Orderly. As the Bn Postal Orderly I would meet the Bristol Freighter from Vietnam every week and then sort and deliver the mail to the wives in Singapore. Mail has always been moral boosting and when I delivered the mail I was always beeing met by the children or wife waiting at the gate for their mail.

Driving in Singapore was never easy but thankfully we never had an accident. The drivers from the Transport Section were always up to it. Every now and then I was driven by a new posting in that used to worry me some. The mail always got through. When Changi closed down I had to meet the flight at Seleta.

I have some very fond memories of my time with 1RNZIR.
