Sam was a multi-instrumentalist but mainly a bass saxophone player in the Quin Tikis showband that toured Vietnam in 1969. He passed away in October 1974, and his medals were presented to his son David by his brother Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae at Government House in Auckland on 20 July 2016.
