Served in Malaya with 1st Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, 1957–1959. Selected to be a Bandsman playing the flugelhorn. On return to New Zealand changed Corps to Royal New Zealand Engineers. Later served in Vietnam with 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery as a Pay Clerk, 1967–1968.
