Served with 1st Battalion, New Zealand Regiment 1957−1959 as a Sergeant in 6 Platoon, B Company. During this period, he was Mentioned in Despatches (MID). In late 1965 he served in 2 Detachment, New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS) in Borneo as a Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2). After receiving an officer’s commission, he served in Vietnam as the second-in-command (2ic) of Support Company of 4RAR/NZ (ANZAC). Area Officer at Area 4 Hamilton before retirement at the rank of Major.
