Enlisted in the New Zealand Army in 1962. Graduated from Officer Cadet School (OCS) Portsea in December 1963 into Royal New Zealand Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RNZEME). Transferred to Royal New Zealand Army Service Corps (RNZASC) in the mid-1960s. Posted to Vietnam in 1968 as a Captain with the New Zealand Component. Returned to New Zealand in May 1969 and promoted to Major in the early 1970s. Officer commanding (OC) of 21 Supply Company before retiring in February 1984.
