Posted to 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Regiment in late 1961 and then served with 1st Battalion, New Zealand Regiment in Malaya, 1961–1963. Posted to 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery (RNZA) at Papakura in May 1965 and departed for Vietnam with the battery in July 1965 as the junior Medical non-commissioned officer (NCO). Served again with New Zealand Force in Singapore, before before leaving the army in the early 1970s.
