Regular Force cadet from 1961 (Stewart) class. Transferred to the Royal New Zealand Artillery (RNZA) in late 1962. Served in the New Zealand Special Air Service 1964–1965 before going to Vietnam in the original 161 Battery, RNZA in 1965. Attached to 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) at Bien Hoa and 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) at Nui Dat as a radio operator in a Forward Observer (FO) party. With B Company, 6RAR at the Battle of Long Tan.
Left the New Zealand Army in 1967 and continued to work for the New Zealand Government until retirement in September 2010.
