Enlisted in the Regular Force (RF) in June 1963 and posted to 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Regiment at Burnham. Served in 1st Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, and 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment in Malaysia, 1963–1965. This included 1965 tour to Borneo. Posted to Vietnam as Company Clerk with Victor 6 (V6) Company, May–December 1971. Retired from the Army in September 1983 at the rank of warrant officer class 1 (WO1).
