Enlisted in the Regular Force (RF) in June 1969. Posted to Vietnam with 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery (RNZA), June 1970 to May 1971. Served in Transport Section (two months), on No. 6 Gun (seven months), and as Manager Post Exchange (PX) for six weeks. Promoted to Lance Bombardier and joined the Territorial Force (TF) 4th Medium Regiment, (RNZA) on return to New Zealand.
