Served in 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1RNZIR), 1965–1967. Completed tour to Borneo in 1966 before serving in Vietnam with Victor 1 Company (V1), May–November 1967. After returning to New Zealand, posted back to 1RNZIR in Malaysia and then to Vietnam again with Whiskey 2 Company, November 1968 to November 1969. During the second tour, he was a member of the Support Company of the 6RAR/NZ (ANZAC) Battalion.
