Regular Force (RF) Cadet in Parkinson Class, 1964. Graduated into the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (RNZIR). Served in 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1RNZIR), 1965–67. Completed tours to Borneo in 1966 and then Vietnam with Victor 1 (V1) Company, May–November 1967. Later Regimental sergeant major (RSM) of Wellington Training District (WTD) then 5th Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (5RNZIR) in the 1980s.
