Enlisted as a Regular Force (RF) Cadet In Parkinson Class in 1964. Graduated in 1965 into the Royal New Zealand Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RNZEME). Posted to 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1RNZIR) and then to Vietnam with Admin Company of 2RAR/NZ (ANZAC) Battalion in 1970. Returned to New Zealand in 1971 to RNZEME workshop at Waiouru before leaving the Army.
