Enlisted in the NZ Army during the Second World War and was commissioned into the RNZA serving in 6th Field Regiment. Later served as the G3 Operations at HQRA NZ Division. Posted to C Company 22nd Battalion with J Force in Japan as a Major. Appointed 2IC of 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Regiment for service in Malaya from November 1959 to November 1961 for which he was awarded the MBE. In 1967 He made three visits to Vietnam as a Lieutenant Colonel. Retired from the Army in 1977 as a Brigadier.
