Possibly enlisted in the RF in late 1949. Graduated from Royal Military College, Duntroon in December 1953 into RNZAC. He served in 1st Battalion New Zealand Regiment as a Lieutenant, 1957–1959, where he was also a member of the regimental band. Made two short visits to Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 when he was the GSO2 at NEWZARM in Singapore. Retired from the Army with the rank of Colonel in November 1981.
