Called up for Compulsory Military Training (CMT) in the mid-1950s. Received an officers Commission and posted to 1st Battalion, the Wellington Regiment. Transferred to the Regular Force (RF) for a short period, August–November 1959. In March 1961 he was granted a three-year Commission in the RF and deployed to Malaya with 1st Battalion, New Zealand Regiment as a Platoon Commander in C Company, 1961–1963. On return in March 1964 he was granted a Regular Commission and completed 20 years service in March 1981. In 1970 deployed to Headquarters Vietnam Force (HQ V Force) in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam.
