Joined the New Zealand Army as a 17–year–old in 1966. Posted to Terendak in Malaysia in November 1967. Served two tours in Vietnam. First tour: with Victor 3 (V3) Company (Mortar Platoon), May 1968–May 1969. Second tour: with Whiskey 2 (W2) Company, June–November 1969. Long term service as a Corrections Officer at Kaitoke Prison after discharge and was OC of the Whanganui Cadet Unit.
