Served in 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Regiment in Malaya 1959–1961 and 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1RNZIR) 1963–1965. Attached to New Zealand Embassy in Saigon (August 1965). Returned to New Zealand, took discharge and returned to Vietnam as a civilian employee with Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 16 December 1967. Wife, Margaret Wake, also worked at the embassy.
