Enlisted in the New Zealand Army 1 September 1969. Served in Vietnam with 161 Battery, RNZA 17 November 1970 to 10 May 1971. Promoted later to Lance Bombardier. Discharged 17 June 1971. Served in the Territorial Forces, 14 December 1977 to 12 July 1978 before rejoining the RNZA, New Zealand Army, 14 July 1978 to 11 December 1988 as Staff Sergeant. Later served in the RNZAF Territorial Force as General Service Hand, 17 April 1989 to 5 July 2019.
