Serving with the medical teams in Vietnam - Ken Treanor

Submitted by quinhon72 on

I served two tours in Vietnam. My first tour was with the 1st New Zealand Services Medical Team in Bong Song 1968-1969.

I was a Public Heath NCO attached to the Province Health Service as a liaison between the USAID Health Advisory Group and the Vietnamese Health Service. This role involved visiting the secure areas of the Province, concentrating on Village/District dispensaries, providing material to combat disease such as TB, plague, malaria etc, assisting with material to rebuild destroyed dispensaries, provision of pamphlets on public health issues, portable water supplies, and generally assisting the Province Health Service.

I went back to Vietnam 1972-1973 after being seconded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to fill the post of Administration Officer to the New Zealand Surgical Team which had been based in Qui Nhon since 1963. It involved all matters relevant to the Team so that the doctors and nurses could get on with their task in the clinical field.
