Enlisted in the Army as an Regular Force (RF) Cadet in Young Class in 1954. Graduated into the New Zealand Regiment in 1957 and selected for Officer Cadet School Portsea in Australia, graduating in June 1958 into the New Zealand Regiment. Posted to A Company, 1st Battalion, New Zealand Regiment in Malaya as a Platoon Commander. Returned to New Zealand in November 1959. Served in Vietnam as second-in-command of Victor 4 Company from May 1969 to May 1970 as a Captain. Later promoted to Major.
